Girl and the Goat

Location: 809 W. Randolph St., Chicago IL, 60661
Girl & the Goat on Urbanspoon

A Quick Word:
A restaurant that goes above and beyond its hype!  This is definitely an amazing place to try more exotic approaches at cooking and a great way to be adventurous without stepping too far outside normal comfort zones.  The small plates here are perfectly sized and the menu is extensive enough and changes frequently enough that the restaurant will be calling your name to come back and try more.  I am so glad this gem is found in the great food city of Chicago!

What I ate:

Beet Bread

Sometimes I wonder why places charge for bread and butter... and then I try this bread.  I honestly wished we ordered more of their breads!  This beet bread was freshly baked with pork fat...  It comes out steaming hot and with a side of sweetened assorted nuts and a creamy goat butter (I believe).  Slicing the bread can be a little tricky, but once you get a slice, top it with a generous helping of the butter and sprinkle just a few nuts (you don't want to overpower the pork fat flavor).  I kept wanting more of their bread throughout the night.

Crispy Duck Tongues

I believe this dish is a great one for non-adventurous eaters.  It sounds crazy... I mean it says duck tongue in its name.  Anyway, this dish reminds me of the typical stir fry you get in a chinese restaurant. Stir-fried with some roasted mushrooms and assorted greens and topped with crispy wontons.  I craved a rice or some sort of starchy vessel to eat with the dish.  The tongues were extremely crispy, so that fried flavor definitely came through.  Delicious!

Goat Carpaccio

Sliced extremely thin, this is the raw goat option we decided to try.  It was served with a micro green salad mixed on top along with a few capers and smoked roe.  I love capers so I may be biased but rolling some of the salad, capers, and roe into a roll with the goat meat made a memorable bite.  Sorry for the blurry picture.

Goat Chorizo Flatbread

The flatbread here was a nice way to explore the goat meat option without being to "exotic."  The vessel was a crispy wheat crust.  It was topped with goat chorizo, apples, ricotta, and green tomatoes.  It is a perfect plate for four people!  I do wish they used maybe a goat cheese instead of the ricotta, but I do see how that stronger cheese may overpower the other ingredients.  I just have a taste for goat cheese and unfortunately didn't try anything with it.

Escargot Ravioli

This was my first time trying escargot in a non-French way (usually I have it in butter and with toasted baguette slices).  I was excited about this dish and it turned out amazing.  In fact, it was one of my favorites.  The ravioli are huge and each stuffed with a full escargot.  It was very simple... cooked with a little bacon and had a miso type sauce to it.  I could eat a bowl of these and still would crave for more.

Steamed Mussels

Without a doubt some of the largest mussels I have ever seen/eaten.  They literally took up the entire shell and changed my view of mussels forever.  They were cooked in an amazing white wine broth and served with crispy goat sausage croutons!  You have to let those croutons soak in the the broth before eating them... It does remove the crunchiness but loads the croutons with even more amazing flavors.  I just wished I had more bread to dip into this delicious broth!

Confit Goat Belly

Another one of my top dishes from this restaurant and another one of their goat specials of the day.  This goat belly is cooked in a bourbon butter with lobster and fennel.  Huge chunks of both the belly and lobster were everywhere.  I really enjoyed mixing everything together and making that one great bite!  Definitely a must have!

Crispy Pig Face

Coming from a Filipino background, I have had a similar dish to this known as Sisig.  The modern spin wasn't as good as the traditional version I had in Cebu, Philippines, but it was a great way to introduce the dish to Chicago!  The Pig Face is mostly the cheek of the pig and some of the skin.  It is oven roasted and then mixed with some chopped onion and potatoes.  It is all topped with a sunny side up egg.  When you get this dish, make sure to MIX EVERYTHING!  It is supposed to be served with rice... and I believe it would be 10x better if it came with a side of rice.  But overall it is a good dish and a funny item that shows up on your receipt!

Sautéed Green Beens

Our waitress recommended these as the vegetable we should try.  Once again I saw a spin on a Filipino dish that I have grown up eating.  After sautéing the green beans, they top it with a creamy version of a fish sauce and some chopped cashews.  There were great texture contrasts in this dish, but the fish sauce may be a little too strong for some people.

Grilled Pork Ribs

Fall of the bone ribs... usually I have very picky because some places have tough ribs... But we figured at such a popular restaurant it must be delicious... and it was!  It had a nice spicy rub on the meat and then was topped with some kind of sauce that was hard to explain.  I probably wouldn't order it the next time but only because there are so many other menu items to choose from.

Chocolate Chili Cake with Peanut Cream

Once again I apologize for such terrible pictures.  Anyway, this dessert was recommended by the waitress.  It is extremely rich... especially with both peanut butter and chocolate.  So if you are looking for that rich dessert.. try this one for sure.  The chili actually is more prominent than expected.  A slight burn is felt after a couple bites and it makes you wish for some kind of ice cream to be served with this dish.  Great dessert!

Butternut Squash Donuts with Cheddar Cheese and Ice Cream

How could we pass up on a dessert with cheddar cheese and butternut squash?  We didn't... mainly because it sounds like typical entree ingredients.  I really enjoyed this dessert because of the salty and sweet contrasts.  The squash donuts were surprisingly sweet and freshly fried.  The cheddar cheese was nice and sharp and the ice cream just made the entire dish creamy.  Definitely a great way to cap off an amazing and memorable meal!

Smoking Jacket Cocktail

I am not much of a liquor/cocktail drinker, but had to try this little creation.  Unfortunately I forgot the ingredients but I do remember it calls for liquid smoke.  Try it!

The DOs/DON'Ts:
DO:
- Do order the different styles of bread.  It may seem weird to order bread for the table, but missing out on their amazing homemade breads would be disappointing.
- Do come with a larger crowd.  This allows you to try a larger variety of the small plates without breaking the bank.
- Do leave room for dessert.  Even if everything sounds amazing on the menu... the desserts are comparable if not better!
- Do use valet parking... This area is difficult to park and the valet right in front of the restaurant will make your experience that much better.

DON'T:
- Don't forget to make reservations weeks in advance... It is one of the most popular restaurants and is definitely hard to get a seat.
- Try not to arrive late... The hostesses are very considerate, but walk-ins may get your table if you come too late.

GT Fish & Oyster

April 15, 2012
531 N. Wells St., Chicago, IL 60654
GT Fish & Oyster on Urbanspoon

A Quick Word:
GT Fish & Oyster is definitely one of the better seafood restaurants in Chicago focusing on the small plate style of food.  They have a huge variety and everything is extremely fresh.  I rate this restaurant so highly not only because of their delicious food, but also because of their daily 10pm special... Anytime after 10pm, the oysters are half off and still AMAZING.  Definitely a must try!

What I Ate:

A Dozen Oysters (Variety)

A nice sampler of the day's fresh selection. I personally do not know much about oysters, so having a variety I was able to compare the difference flavors of each oyster. Unfortunately I do not know which oysters we ordered but I do remember that the waitress was very knowledgable and helped in the decision making process. By the way, their homemade cocktail sauce has a nice "bite" to it!!

Hamachi Crudo

A serving of raw fish slightly prepared with some lemons and sliced cucumber.  The fish was cut nice and thin and intermixed with the cucumber.  Having a bite with every component of the dish is a must.  I remember this dish to be extremely refreshing. Definitely a good choice... Almost like a palate cleanser for the next dish!

Baja Shrimp Bruschetta

Without question my FAVORITE DISH at this restaurant.  Who would have thought avocado cream, baja style shrimp, crushed pistachios, and red sweet jalapeños could make easily the best bruschetta and possibly the best two bites I've ever eaten!  The layers of flavor were incredible with a slight heat coming from the red jalapeños and the wonderful creaminess from the avocado.  The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the pistachios gave it the needed crunch.  This dish makes it on looks, texture, taste... A MUST HAVE!

Oyster Po' Boy Sliders

A bite of heaven! Easiest way to describe these sliders! They are mini sliders filled with a flash fried oyster, kimichi, and a garnish with peanuts.  The kimchi was definitely the "kicker"... giving it a nice pickled/spicy flavor and also a crunch.  The peanut was unnecessary so I am assuming people with allergies can ask for the sliders with peanuts.  Great recommendation by our waitress. I could only wish the portion was 5 times what it was!  Just remember, you pay per slider so the tab can add up quickly with these guys.

Smoked Salmon Gnocchi

I find myself being extremely picky with my gnocchi. Consistency was on point and the smoked salmon was delicious. This was definitely one of the more filling dishes of the night and probably one of the largest too.  They rotate their pasta option... I was disappointed they weren't offering the squid ink gnocchi but whatever they have, I suggest trying it!

Brandade Croquettes

Didn't know what they were... So we got them anyway. Turns out to be a bite with a powerful punch. Salt cod and potato mashed up and deep fried then served on a light fennel and orange salad. The croquettes were amazing... Extremely crispy and served nice and warm.  Unfortunately, the accompanying salad was too bland.

Chocolate Stout Mousse

Super rich! If you like creamy desserts... This will definitely hit the spot! I love the contrast in textures with the silk smooth mousse and the crunchy peanut brittle.  They paired well together and was a great way to end the meal.

Salted Caramel Tart

This amazing little tart. Once again there was a nice contrast in flavor... Sweet and salty! Not as rich as the chocolate dessert but definitely a dessert not to be missed!

The DOs/DON'Ts:
DO:
- Make reservations because this restaurant has been popular recently and difficult to get in.
- 10PM nightly special -- Half price oysters... Everyone should definitely take advantage of this special... it makes the oysters more affordable and allows everyone to try the different varieties!
- Do ask the waiter/waitress if there are any special oysters.  We found that one of the better oysters wasn't even listed on the menu

DON'T:
- Parking is tough, so if possible, don't drive.
- Don't expect to get extremely full.  The small plate option is wonderful, but its almost to a new extreme with some of these plates.  Wonderful and complex flavors but SMALL portions.
- Random, but don't expect to use your Discover Card... when I was there they didn't take it.

Big Stuff **CLOSED**

January 16, 2012
2312 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, IL 60614
Big Stuff on Urbanspoon

A Quick Word:
The name of the restaurant describes it all... they serve food in super-sized portions!  Just see the picture below to see the huge slices of pizza... literally the SIZE OF YOUR HEAD!  I especially enjoy coming here later at night rather than having it for a meal.

What I Ate:

Bigger Slices (Pepperoni and Cheese)

Seeing a picture online, I was first skeptical on how big the slices of pizza really could be.  And when getting to the restaurant, it didn't seem that big... They have two slices, big and bigger ($5 and $8, respectively).  We both opted for the bigger slice and waited as they warmed it up in the oven.  I had pepperoni which made the pizza a little too greasy for my liking and my roommate had the cheese slice.  We had it to go and we knew the slices were big when they used custom "to go" boxes.  Anyway, the pizza crust was crispy but there was just too much grease on top of the cheese... napkins may be used to dry off some of that grease.  The crust though had more flavor then the other large pizza places but overall, I still consider them to be all similar...  places to grab pizza after a night of drinking.

The DOs/DON'Ts:
DO:
- Do order the bigger slice if you want to be blown away by sheer size.
- Do look for a groupon... this place is frequently on Groupon Now and it makes it much more reasonably priced!

DONT:
- Don't expect this to be the healthiest pizza!

Devon Seafood Grill

November 5, 2011 and multiple other dates...
39 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago, IL 60611
Devon Seafood Grill on Urbanspoon

A Quick Word:
This is a great restaurant to "fall back on" if other reservations don't work out.  Not only are they good for last minute reservations, Devon Seafood Grill has delicious fresh fish options and also more gourmet twists on typical classic dishes.  Some menu options are "hit or miss" but overall most people leave happy!

What I ate:

Lobster Tamale

Looks like a mess! But all of that together is the Lobster Tamale! But I was disappointed... The tamale is topped with plenty of lobster, corn, roasted poblano peppers, cilantro, and an avocado crema. It was disappointing because the tamale had no flavor... It was plain massa and instead of cooking ingredients within it, they just piled it on top. The toppings were delicious but you could put it on top of rice or bread and it would be the same. They need to somehow incorporate it more into the massa dough!

Lobster Bisque

Extremely creamy and rich lobster bisque! It had a few chunks of lobster and was very smooth. This isn't the watered down version you get at other places.   because of the richness, I don't suggest getting a huge entree... grilled fish or one of their salads would pair well with this soup.  I do suggest you dip the homemade biscuits in this soup!

Roast Duck Flatbread

An excellent appetizer... this flatbread is topped roast duck, sliced apples, thinly sliced red onions, and gorgonzola cheese.  Tons of flavor but the roast duck is hidden under the strong flavors of the red onion and cheese.  Maybe it would be better with a milder cheese?  I really enjoyed this appetizer but did wish for the duck to shine.

Grilled Swordfish

Perfectly grilled fish kept simple!  I always believe fresh fish should be the center of a dish and simply grilling the thick swordfish steak was amazing.  It was lightly seasoned, served with some lemon juice, and had just the right char!  The sides were ok... the brussel sprouts were a little oily for my liking (cooked with bacon) and the mushroom leek mixture was almost too creamy.  I wish I had stuck with the yukon gold mashed potatoes but I felt like trying something new this day.

Orange Cream Chocolate Tart

This dessert reminded me of a cannoli.  The outer shell had a similar consistency and it was filled with a fluffy cream filling.  After being covered in chocolate, the dessert was topped with sliced oranges and served with a side of pistachio ice cream.  This ice cream definitely made the dessert.  Having chunks of pistachio made this ice cream completely different from the normal pistachio ice cream I have tried.  It gave it the much needed crunch or texture change that makes desserts great.

Petite Lemon Meringue Pie

Super refreshing!  This dessert is perfect for someone that wants to not only cleanse their palate but have a dessert that is sweet but not too sweet.  The lemon meringue pie was good... it had a nice bite to it and looked amazing.  But once again, the star was that mint-lime sorbet.  I definitely suggest having a small bite of the sorbet before the pie so you can taste the two components.  They are both very subtle at first and pop out once you start eating the sweeter pie.

The DOs/DON'Ts:
DO:
- COME HERE FOR BRUNCH! They usually have a buffet for a special holiday and WOW!  It is probably one of my favorite buffets just because many of their dishes are still made to order (different stations) and they also have a huge variety.  It also the cost is much cheaper than the other buffets in the city, especially for Mother's Day!
- Do try some of the other appetizers.  I personally love appetizers and I think Devon does a great job packing them with flavor.  I believe on certain days they have a happy hour special dealing with their appetizers and cocktails.
- Do ask for more biscuits... they like bringing them out one by one so they stay warm... so don't be shy!
- Do try the wine flights.  They offer a few types and I enjoyed them all.

DON'T:
- Don't order their Lobster Mac n Cheese.  Yes it sounds amazing but I have had it multiple times and it doesn't live up to its hype.  Minimal lobster and overpowering cheese flavor will most likely be your opinion if you do order it.
- Don't come for restaurant week or any of the other special days. The options are extremely limited and portion size is disappointing.  I recommend ordering off the regular menu at all times.
- Try not to order the calamari.  Though very tasty, it tends to be more of the fried jalapeños and other vegetables that stand out, not the calamari.

Take Me Out

Location: 1502 W. 18th St., Chicago, IL 60608
Take Me Out on Urbanspoon

A Quick Word:
A great wing place in the heart of Pilsen.  Take Me Out focuses on Asian flavors rather than the typical buffalo American style.  I always wonder why an Asian wing place would open in the middle of Chicago's "Mexican neighborhood," but after trying these wings I understand.  The atmosphere is a very clean restaurant with just a few tables.  I think their concept was more take out rather than eat in.  I was a huge fan of Great Sea Chinese Restaurant's wings, and when I found out this was the sister restaurant, I knew I would be hooked.  Personally, I like the original better because I find them to be a little crunchier.  Maybe it is just me being biased but that is why I gave it a 3.5 mile rather than 4.

What I Ate:

Crab Rangoon

Served piping hot and made to order, these crab rangoon are extremely crispy!  They are served with a side of sweet and sour sauce which is perfect for the appetizer.  Unfortunately, the filling was majority cream cheese with not much crab flavor.  I did enjoy how the cream cheese was melted from being freshly fried.

Little Hotties (Spicy)

These chicken wings are delicious.  The flavors are strong but not too spicy.  Each order comes with around eight wings and it seems like they are "lollipops" because they specially prepare them by exposing the bone and having the meat bunch up at the top.  The meat wasn't as tender as I hoped for and also most of the flavor is directly from the sauce... The dish is simply garnished with chopped scallions.  I do wish they had extra sauce to mix with the white rice.

Little Hotties (Medium)

The medium spiced wings are also addicting.  Not having the slight burn is nice, but I still prefer the spicy ones.  This time we had brown rice as opposed to the white rice or purple rice option.  I have also had these to go and enjoy them still crispy at home!

The DOs/DON'Ts:
DO:
- Make sure to get the spicy wings... I enjoy spicy wings and they still weren't that spicy.

DONT:
- Don't count this place out because it is in the middle of Pilsen... there are plenty of Mexican Restaurants in this neighborhood but these wings are delicious.
